What is Skillshare?
Skillshare was founded in New York in 2010 by two digital veterans Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong. Offering more than 35,000 courses (or as they say classes) and 5 million users, it is one of the most popular e-learning platforms and focuses on courses for creatives and entrepreneurs.
If you are new to Skillshare, let me briefly explain what it is and how it works.
Skillshare is one of the best online learning platforms for people who want to learn new skills or improve existing ones. It started in 2012 with only 25 courses at the time.
The platform is constantly growing and now has thousands of courses in various niches. Skillshare offers its members unlimited access to classes for a monthly subscription fee and also offers many free classes.
Skillshare courses are not accredited and also you will not receive a certificate at the end. You get better through skills that can be applied in real life.
I believe that skills sharing is the future of education.
However, it is a bit different from traditional education.
Skillshare’s main goal is to provide quality information to its students and ensure that they complete practical tasks and apply new skills in real-life situations.
How Does Skillshare Work?
If you are interested in becoming a lifelong learner, Skillshare is the platform for you.
You can learn almost any skill on this website simply by taking video lessons and online workshops.

Skillshare is a platform that covers a wide range of topics, with the main focus on creating online courses for creative categories.
Here you will find all kinds of topics with which you can advance your career or simply dedicate yourself to your hobbies.
What makes Skillshare unique?
A few things distinguish Skillshare from other online learning platforms:

- Skillshare is very cheap. You can sign up for a 30-day free trial, purchase a monthly subscription, or purchase an annual premium membership with a 40% discount. That includes unlimited access to all shared skill classes.
- Speaking of classes, Skillshare usually invites outstanding teachers. They recently launched two new courses taught by NBC talk show host Lilly Singh and New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Van Ness.
- You can study for free! Yes, it’s true: Skillshare also has thousands of free classes.

Student Perspective
As a Skillshare student(Skillshare prices at a cheap prices), you will find a clear and clean learning platform that is easy to get used to.
The lessons are structured consistently so you don’t have to worry about adapting to a new format when you log into a new course.
The only thing that differs greatly between classes is the length. Some classes contain 50 or more short videos of one or two minutes, while others contain only 10 videos, every 10 minutes in length.
There are no restrictions or requirements on the length or duration of a class.
Also, some classes have assignments and some do not. In most cases, you will be invited to share your work with other students.
Some instructors continue to provide feedback on student work; in fact, this is a great way to see if a Skillshare course is worth it or not, while others are not.
There are essentially two main categories of classes in Skillshare: SkillshareOriginals and Custom Classes.
If you are an individual creating a class on Skillshare, earn money from the class and sell it yourself. Skillshare Original, on the other hand, is produced by Skillshare, often in collaboration with partners like Patreon and Mailchimp.
These courses can be taught by celebrities and are generally of much higher quality.
Most of these courses include multiple videos that are around ten minutes long, are designed to be completed in sequence, and are very easy to follow.
These courses are some of the best if you want to master a subject.
They know exactly what you are getting, and the videos are short enough to watch in parts, pause, and restart as needed for a truly self-directed course.
User-created (or custom) classes are also often high-quality, although they are not as consistent.
These are typically a bit shorter and less likely to be taught by familiar faces that you already know and love.
However, Skillshare is unique among other online learning platforms in that its team runs courses on a constant and regular basis to review and remove those that are not of the highest quality.
As a Skillshare student, you will love the wide variety of courses available. There are many options to choose from and most of the courses are taught by experienced teachers.
Of course, some are taught by teachers who don’t know much about what they are trying to teach.
However, it is quite easy to solve them by reading the reviews of other students and getting a quick preview of the course.
Who teaches at Skillshare?
Anyone can teach on Skillshare. This can be both bad and good. Most of the courses are taught by professionals, experts in their fields, and even celebrities, but some professors are just not good at it.
So again, read the reviews before taking a course.
Famous Skillshare Teachers
In 2021, Skillshare introduced three new courses that exceeded my expectations by being taught by famous teachers.
Social Media Storytelling by Lilly Singh
Lilly Singh hosts her late-night NBC talk show A Little Bit Late with Lilly Singh, executive producer and author of the New York Times bestseller of her book HOW TO BE A BAWSE: A Guide to Survival for Life to conquer.
At Skillshare, Lilly teaches a class called Social Media Success: Video Storytelling on YouTube and Beyond.
The course lasts 1 hour and 39 minutes and consists of ten short lessons in which Lilly shares her process of creating viral videos.
This is the perfect course for any YouTuber or Instagramer looking for advice on how to create great videos and grow their following on social media.
The Ultimate SelfCare Playbook by Jonathan Van Ness
Jonathan Van Ness is the New York Times best-selling author of his memoir Over The Top: A Raw Journey To SelfLove and Emmy star of the Netflix series Queer Eye.
At Skillshare, JVN teaches a class called The Ultimate SelfCare Playbook: Discover and nurture your centered self.
The course lasts 1 hour and 21 minutes and consists of thirteen lessons. In this course, Jonathan shares his self-care secrets (including skincare, yoga, journaling, meditation, and crafts lessons) and teaches how to unleash creativity, unleash your true desires, start a fitness routine. sustainable personal care and building a relationship with yourself.
Character Design by Josiah Brooks (aka Jazza)
Josiah (Jazza) Brooks is a television host, illustrator, writer, and creator of the popular YouTube channel Draw With Jazza.
At Skillshare, Jazza teaches a class called Character Design: From Idea to Final Illustration.
The course lasts 1 hour and 5 minutes and consists of 9 lessons. This course is perfect for anyone looking to learn about character design. You will see Jazza create his characters from scratch and learn to think of the ideas he wants to draw.
The Instructor Perspective
As an instructor on Skillshare, you will experience several benefits when you post your course here, especially compared to other course platforms.
The beauty of Skillshare is that anyone can be an instructor; it is not necessary to have a degree or other special qualifications.
Not only that, but you also have full autonomy when it comes to your course. It is up to you to decide how to structure, design, and even do all the day-to-day details, like uploading materials and videos.
As a shared skills instructor, you earn money from course fees. Unfortunately, figuring out exactly how much you are going to earn can be a bit tricky at first, although it is a pricing structure that you will eventually get used to.
According to Skillshare, your royalties go into a pool of money each month. This is 30% of the Premium Membership income.
Also, Skillshare adds up the number of minutes Premium members watched their videos, and not just paid members.
The calculation also takes into account the unpaid subscribers who watch the videos.
Interestingly, the speed and amount of time each student watches their video also affects their royalties.
For example, if a student increases the playback speed of a video, it decreases the playback time and license fees she receives.
You will receive a payment that includes all premium minutes viewed during the month and then calculate a percentage for each teacher.
It’s important to note that you must have watched all of your videos for at least 30 minutes to start earning royalties each month or you won’t qualify.
This payment structure is too complicated for many shared skills teachers, a factor that leads many to move their lessons to other online learning platforms.
However, the great thing about Skillshare is that you don’t have to worry about paying membership fees and you can calculate how much you will earn each month so that you can plan more or less for income.
Who is Skillshare for?
This e-learning platform is aimed at professionals who want to develop new skills or improve existing ones.
Since it focuses on creatives (eg, designers, chefs, artists, etc.) and entrepreneurs (eg, Marketing or SEO specialists), the self-employed or small business community will enjoy Skillshare to the fullest.
However, if your goal is to obtain a formal education (or certification), Skillshare is not a good option for you.
In those cases, I suggest you check out Coursera.

Tips to choose the best Skillshare class
How do I choose a course to take?
I developed a simple system to help me pre-qualify a class before attending it to see if it is worth my time and if it would benefit me.
I suggest doing this simple “class research” before joining Skillshare to make sure there are enough classes in your area of interest.
- Choose the category that interests you the most. Then explore shared skills classes.
- If the course doesn’t look right, skip it. I think the miniature says a lot about the teacher and how much effort they put into creating his class.
- Watch the introductory video (each class has one). Read the reviews.
- See what kinds of projects other students in the class have created.
- If something is wrong, just skip the class and find another one that you like better.
Are Skillshare courses accredited?
Skillshare courses are not accredited. You will not receive a certificate after taking a course. Skillshare is about acquiring practical knowledge, learning new skills, and broadening your horizons.
Some people wonder if Skillshare can get them a job. Look friends, everything depends on you. If you are learning many new skills that are needed for a specific position, Skillshare can help you find a job or advance your career.
.And although Skillshare does not issue certificates, I think the courses would look great on your resume. And when you create a project during your course, you will be given a URL that can appear on your resume, portfolio, or anywhere else.
Skillshare Live Sessions
In spring 2020, Skillshare introduced Live Sessions, a new way to learn and network. Here you can see the upcoming classes live.
Live Skillshare Sessions enable students to grow, learn, connect, and explore in a creative community.
Each session lasts 60 minutes or less, and if you choose to attend, you will work with the instructors to learn new skills and techniques.
You can ask questions in real-time and get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the entire process.
live sessions are available to all premium members. However, keep in mind that space is limited, so it is best to check the next calendar in advance.
How Live Sessions Work:
- Simply click the “Remember” button next to the course you want to take. You will then see that the status of the course has been changed to “Subscribed”.
- You will receive a 15-minute notice to attend the live session on the day of the event.
- Space is limited to 300 people, but the sessions are very popular, so register well in advance.
- You can participate via chat and ask questions.
- It is recommended that the camera be turned on, but not necessary.
- All live sessions are hosted on the Zoom platform.
- Few select teachers have been admitted to live sessions, which means that all classes are top-notch.
Live Sessions is another great way to learn on the Skillshare platform. I will post more updates and share my experience soon.
What are Skillshare workshops?
Skillshare offers a wide range of workshops.
What distinguishes workshops from premium courses is that you join other Skillshare students on a schedule set by the teacher.
The workshops usually last a few weeks and are perfect for students who are interested in a more intense learning experience and want more feedback from teachers. The workshops are usually conducted by the best Skillshare teachers.
I enjoyed this feature, it exceeded my expectations.
Most of the workshops are already included in your premium subscription and you can attend them for free. Sometimes you may come across a unique shop that has limited seating and may cost a bit more.
In my experience, these are usually great courses that are definitely worth your time.
Skillshare mobile app review 2021

You can download the Skillshare app if you prefer to study on the go and use mobile devices for class. If you have a premium membership, you can also study offline.
All you have to do is download the classes beforehand. I find the Skillshare app very responsive and easy to use.
You can view different courses in the app or on your computer, track progress, and save right where you left off. I think it’s good that you have so little content because that way I don’t feel overwhelmed by a mass of material.
Learning is fun, easy, and manageable in my busy daily life. That’s another thing I love about Skillshare
Will Skillshare help me with my carrier?
While Skillshare will not give you a formal promotion as you do not have any accredited certificates, there is a very good chance that you will improve your professional skills so that you can work more safely.
All Skillshare courses are based on projects I would say Skillshare is ideal if you are a freelancer (or part of a creative team) and don’t care too much about getting certificates and building your resume.
Skillshare is more about giving you the knowledge that you can apply to your job.
There is also a dedicated community of learners on Skillshare. This can be a great way to connect with other professionals in your field
Is Skillshare Legit?
This is one of the most common questions I get and I think it’s time to bring it up.
Let me clarify that Skillshare is a reputable company and if you look at the reviews on the Trustpilot website, you will find that there are a lot of good reviews.
I looked at the reviews and found that almost everyone who left a negative review complained about the same thing – they were charged after a free trial ended (however, no one complained about getting free premium access to thousands of to get ratings from high quality).
Yes, it is true. If you sign up for the Skillshare free trial and don’t cancel your subscription before it expires, you will be billed automatically.
Many people keep asking themselves the same question: can you cancel your Skillshare membership if you sign up for a free trial?
And the answer is yes! Of course, you can cancel it at any time during the trial period if you want to avoid being charged.
Another frequently asked question is Can you get a refund from Skillshare?
Skillshare will only offer refunds for the annual premium membership if you have requested within 7 days of receipt of payment.
You can’t get a refund for a monthly subscription, which makes perfect sense to me. Try Skillshare free for a month, see if you like it, and then make up your mind.
If for some reason it’s not what you expected, you don’t have to wait 30 days to cancel your subscription, you can always do it before the trial expires. Set a reminder on your calendar so you don’t forget it.
How to publish a course on Skillshare?
There are no formal requirements to post a course on Skillshare, you don’t have to be a college professor or a super famous designer or artist, although that helps.
As a Skillshare teacher, you are responsible for designing your course, producing the videos and materials, uploading the resources to Skillshare, and staying in contact with your students.
There are two ways to pay Skillshare teachers:
- You receive $ 10 for every new student you bring to Skillshare
- For every minute viewed of your class, Skillshare pays you a license fee.
Payments to instructors are made through PayPal, unfortunately, there is no other way to pay with Skillshare.
Keep in mind that the speed at which students view your courses will have an impact on your earnings. For example, if you watch 2 times for 20 minutes, you will be paid for 10 minutes, and if you watch 0.5 times for 20 minutes, you will be paid for 40 minutes.
There are guidelines for instructors to use when creating courses, but they are mostly reasonable recommendations:
- Create engaging and educational content
- Sound and video must be of good quality
- Must have introductory / presentation video
- Lectures must be project-based
- Self-promotion is not allowed outside of course introduction and completion
- Maximum load of 1 course per week
- Some topics are not allowed: passive income, other educational platforms (e.g. Udemy), reselling of products or medical content
- At least 10 minutes per course
